How to Prepare the Right Song for Performance: A Guide for Young Singers

Last month we covered how to choose the right song for a performance or an audition. However, choosing the right song is just the first step towards a successful performance. To truly shine on stage, singers need to invest time and effort in preparing their chosen song. At Seattle Songbird Academy, we understand the challenges that arise during this process. Our founder, Tonya, has faced similar hurdles in her own training and is passionate about helping young singers overcome them.

Here are our top 5 tips to help you prepare the right song and maximize your performance potential.

1. Go back to the basics:

Begin each rehearsal or performance with a thorough warm-up session. Spend at least 15 – 20 minutes warming up your voice to ensure it’s in optimal condition. This will help you develop consistency and maintain vocal health throughout your practice sessions and performances.

2. Connect with your breath and technique:

Lie on the floor during warm-up exercises for your new song. This position allows you to connect deeply with your breath and develop a solid technical foundation. By focusing on breath support, and vocal technique, you’ll improve your overall performance. We also recommend singing through the song while laying on the floor as this will assist you in understanding your breath as you perform.

3. Utilize the mirror:

Rehearse in front of a mirror so that you can visually see how your breath is moving throughout your body. When breathing correctly, your chest and shoulders should remain stationary as you breathe. Your stomach will move in and out as your lungs fill allowing your diaphragm to do the work.  In addition, rehearsing in front of a mirror will allow you to observe your body language, posture, and facial expressions. Ensure your jaw is relaxed and your mouth is open wide for clear enunciation. This visual feedback will help you refine your stage presence and communicate effectively with your audience.

4. Embrace the meaning of the song:

Develop a personal connection to the song’s meaning. Understand its story, emotions, and underlying message. Connecting with the song on an emotional level will enable you to deliver a more authentic and captivating performance. As Tonya says, when you connect with the song, your audience will connect with you.

5. Seek feedback:

Perform the song for friends and family, allowing them to provide constructive feedback. Their fresh perspective can help you identify areas for improvement and enhance your overall performance. Embrace their suggestions and make necessary adjustments to refine your performance.

At Seattle Songbird Academy, we aim to support young singers in their musical journey. We provide budget-friendly voice lessons, focusing on comprehensive preparation for performances. Our goal is to equip our students with the skills and confidence to thrive independently. We understand the importance of merging technical proficiency with emotional connection to create unforgettable performances.

Preparing the right song for performance requires more than just selecting the perfect piece. It demands consistent practice, technical proficiency, emotional connection, and seeking valuable feedback. By following these tips and incorporating them into your routine, you’ll enhance your vocal abilities and captivate your audience with every performance.
